90g Equipment question
I'm thinking of going with a couple Seios in a new 90(48x18x24) I'll be setting up over the next month or two. I'd like to use 2 820's giving me just about 18x turnover and will have an undetermined return pump (looking for recommendations on this one). This will be for a mixed reef having little sps(definitly nothing very challenging to sustain).
What opinions do people have about seios as I've never used them before, only run nano reef tanks before. I looked at tunze's, but they are too pricey and maybe too powerfull for what I'm looking into. ps- for anyone who may be upset about me reposting questions I don't have the ability to search on this site because i don't pay for a premium membership. So I appologize if this seems repetitive. |

Nobody has any advice on this? I'd really appreciate something, even if it is just a link to another thread. Thank you.

i'm setting up a 90g with the exact same dimemsions as your tank. I'm going to be keeping an mixed reef with predominitately SPS and LPS.
My choice for flow will be 2 Seio 1500s. I figure with SPS, the more flow the better. I was considering the 820's but I didn't want to end up with too little flow, so opting for the larger seios. As for the return pump, my tank is an AGA 90RR with the megaflow (rated at 600gph) so i'm gonna be using a dolphin dp800 for the return pump. At 5' of head, it will give me about 550-600gph. The reason i went with this pump is purely because I got it for a good price. But if i were to buy a new one, I'd go with an Eheim 1260. It is only rated at 635gph at 0', but at 5' it still puts out approx 600gph. Plus, they're quiet, and well made.

i've had a 90G with your dimensions for about a year now.
i would do a small return pump 200-400gph and do a closed loop. You can then iliminate the eye-sore of powerheads. I'm doing my closed loop tonight and will post pics, etc... You can see some of my progress here: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...hreadid=565754

I've been running my 90 AGA for about two years. I have one tunze stream 6060 I believe it is. For my return pump I'm using a Mag 12. I've heard that this is too much for return but I have to be honest, I've never had a problem. I have an Eductor on the return outlet. With this combo my tank has "Crazy" flow. My wife always says the fish are getting thrown around. They are all doing great and I keep softies one Hammer and a couple sps. Everything is doing fine. With careful tuning there are no deadspots.
The only reason I may go smaller with Eheim is because of power consumption. |

Thanks for your input guys. I have a mag3 on hand and that seems like it will make a fine return pump unless there is something i'm overlooking here.
A closed loop isn't an option since this will be a semi room divider and I won't have a place to drill on the sides of the tank. So I think I'm going with 2 seio 820s and the mag 3 return giving me in the neighborhood of 20x turnover, which seems a little low to me. The other option is to go with one seio 820 and one 1100 giving me more like 23-24x turnover. what do you guys think about having 2 powerheads and the return as far as making sure there are no dead spots? That is something that has me a little concerned. |

i have a 100gl (48x24x20) tank with no sand, and I currently run (2) seio 1500's. I agree with pinaplex. You dont want to regret with buying smaller pumps and wishing you had more flow. I had the (2) 620's on my 55gl tank, and I thought it was kinda weak.
You can always reduce the flow with the bigger seios. Jeff |
