Stocking ideas?

This is a possible list for my 56 gallon reef tank (30" x 18" x 24" high)

1 Clownfish
1 Clown Goby
1 Kaudern's Cardinal
1 Lawnmower Blenny
1 Royal Gramma Basslet

Other possibles:

Firefish
Black Bar Chromis

Would five be a good limit for the number of fish to put in? Less? Or could I get away with more?

Do you plan on SPS corals? Clown gobies can cause SPS issues.

Five should be fine. Possibly more would work. I like clownfish in pairs, but others don't. Just an option.

That sounds like a fine list to me, although the point about clown gobies is very true.

i think you can have more.. those are all little fish.. rule of thumb is 1" of (adult size) fish per 2 gal. some people say 1" of fish per gallon.. but id go by 2 gals.

I think the "inches of fish per gallon" are very misleading. 2" of puffer is very different from 2" of pipefish, for example.

Good to know that about the clown goby. Not sure if I will get SPS corals, but I suppose it's a possibility down the road...

What about a six line wrasse? Any problems with putting him in that mix instead of the goby?

I don't see any issues with that fish offhand.

Aren't mandarin fish tricky to care for?

Yes, they often require live food, and plenty of rock to supply it. I wouldn't put one in a 56g tank, although it works for some people. I saw a very skinny mandarin in a 65g with a refugium.

i would wait at least a year up and running for the mandarin also if you want a mandarin dont put a wrasse in there since it will compete for food. Good luck

those are small fish so that is pefectly fine.

For your information in my 55 long (48") I have. . .

pair of Occellaris
Mandarin Dragonette
Coral Beauty
Royal Gramma
and 2 small fish neon goby and clown goby

So I have like 5 small fish and 2 REALLY small fish. That would be my personal "stocking" limit if I wasn't planning an upgrade.

You could add in a Spotted Mandarine, I like them a bunch. JD------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Most mandarine's dont do well in reef tanks they need a supply of live pods. And unless you have a ton of live rock and sand and have a very established tank dont buy one. You will not have a tank that will sustian a manderine for long. Not for a beginer
