Transfer(my tank is leaking)

Well i have to transfer my 25 gallon tank because it has a leak. im transfering it to a 29 gallo. should i put all the old water in the new tank or put new water in? All that is in my tank is some snails, hermits, and a crab. I do have a clown fish but he is in QT. thanks for any advice on transfering the tank. Also if you know any links i would love to have them. Thanks for all the help puffer21

I would use as much old water as possible. Maybe 5 gallons of new water?

eckrynock is correct. Try to save most, if not all of your water. I normally drain most of the top water off into buckets, then move rock and critters into the buckets. If you leave about 5 gallons of water in the tank, you can aggressivly siphon the sand bed out, before scooping it into the new tank. This should reduce the amount of stirred-up nasties that could be lurking in your sand bed.

CaribSea costs wayyyy to much for what it is. Just go pick up some play sand and you will be just fine.

Puffer, just remember to take things written here with a grain of salt. I would not suggest play sand. Many people have success with play sand but I would not attempt it. Most play sands that you can buy from hardware stores are made with silica. Theory has it this silica can leach into the water column and create algae blooms. Dubbin, there is a BIG difference between play sand from Home Depot and CaribSea. CaribSea sand has carbonate in it which can help buffer your tank and keep pH more stable. Play sand can not do this. Just food for thought, puffer.

I would still use at least half of your old water and do a little bit larger water changes weekly to get rid of the excess nitrate.

The only play sand I know you can use is the Southdown. It is an aragonite sand, but is hard to find and not available at all on the west coast.

You're right, most other sands are silica. you may be able to find another aragonite play sand, but the search will not be worth the price difference, especially for a 29 gallon.

Be very careful about mixing the RBTA with corals, especially in a tank that small. If you absolutely must, place the anemone first and allow it to get comfortable in your tank. It will move and if it does, it can kill any corals it comes in contact with. Rule of thumb for sand bed is either <1" (SSB) or >4" (DSB) or bare bottom. Good luck!
