Maracyn in a reef tank

Has anyone had first hand experience with using Maracyn or Maracyn 2 in a tank with corals? I have had two expereinced reefest tell me it is fine to use it in the tank. I have also found a post from someone who has said "do not use it in a tank with corals". I am trying to get some information and would appreciate it if anyone with first hand knowledge would give me information.

Thanks!

Okay here is what I would do. I would try to find the mechanism of action of the active ingredient in the product(s) and determine what they affect. From there deduce if it will harm eukaryotes (animal, plant cells) or if it is a stricktly prokaryotic (bacterial) drug. Even if it works through a prokaryotic mechanism it may still indirectly harm you system through killing the benificial bacteria that sustain the nitrogen cycle in your tank. You may find the information on google or some other browser. If not I would try to find a pharmacy guide to drugs, which may also be on the web somewhere.

Good luck,
Mark

I have used Maracyn succesfully with everything from kenya to acros, absolutely no bad effects, I used 1/4 dosage for 3 days in a row...no more cyano!! Great for getting through the stage in a newly setup tank.

Yup- I used it and it took care of my cyano in a hurry. After about 5 days of dosing with the stuff, damn!!! My skimmer was going crazy so much that i had to babysit it and empty the cup every 2 minutes for a few hours!!!
basically instructions i found on here was to keep the skimmer off while dosing a few tablets a day for several days.
Didnt harm any of my corals, but killed all my shrimp, despite my constant dosing of iodine (supposedly it depletes iodine from the water column).
Best of luck to you...

Thanks for the information. I feel much better now. Everything seems to be doing well, day 2, but my xenia's are not looking so hot. I will add some iodine and that should help them.

It may not be a iodine problem. Turn off the skimmer and add a large airstone or do as I did and open a venturi on your powerheads in the display to blast the oxygen in.

Some of the better chemical cleaners can deplete the o2 level and reduce the PH. Up the saturation of o2 and see if it helps the xenia, and double check your PH levels.
