Question about Mag 3 pump.

Anyone use a Mag 3 pump? How noisy was it? What kind of heat do they produce?

I've got a MAG3 and a 5. 5 in the sump and a 3 in a 30 gallon trash can just for mixing water. As long as there not up against aything it's quiet, they do put out a bit of heat though. There warm to the touch but I still need a heater in the 30 trash can to keep the temp at 70 so it's not a tremendous amount. I had read a bunch of bad things about MAG pumps on the WWW but after talking to some people who actually use them and after using them myself there a good pump.

The trick is to only use them for pushing water. Dont try to run them externally, as they make a lot of noise. They dont use gears, only magnets is the reason. I have a mag 7 and my Coralife SS 65 skimmer makes more noise. Mine is for a 37g. tank w/ 10g. sump, and I still have to use a heater, although its just 150w.

Both of mine are submerged if i didn't mention it however it's a sealed unit so i don't see why it would make more noise unless it didn't have enough flow and air would be trapped in between the magnets. I thought about going external with the MAG5 but the location below my tank doesn't have enough room without making some stand modifications (cutting wood) which I'm not willing to do. I do know that the MAG's won't pull water so it has to be located below the water line, don't know if that's an issue or not.

Thanks guys for your input. Much appreciated. My plans were to upgrade my HOB Remora's skimmer pump from a MJ 1200 to a Mag 3.

Wow that's a big upgrade, I had to take my remora off because it caused too many microbubbles in the tank. The Prizm is back on and although it doesn't work quite as well I don't have the micro bubbles anymore and the tank looks much better.
