Plumbing pump externally, do elbows on the intake side add head pressure?
This may be a dumb question, but I'm just not sure. It's looking like I will need to plumb my Eheim 1260 externally for it to fit my tank. To do it, the pump will sit sideways to my sump. So inside the sump I will have a downturned elbow, then to a bulkhead out of the tank, then to a 90 elbow, then true union ball valve, then to the pump. Will making that turn before it gets to the pump add head pressure, or is head only added on the pressure side?

Your right about the head pressure. With a 90 just before the
pump it might produce air bubbles. Water will slam into the back wall of the 90 and turn against itself before it moves into the pump. Than you might get micro bubbles. 2 45s would help. Its best to have the intake pipe larger than the output. So water flows in faster in than out. I went through alot of pvc and fun to learn this. Wish R.C. was here back than(or even P.C.s) dbr |

Well the intake is 3/4. I was going to do 1" out of the sump, 1" true union, and go down to 3/4 right before it hits the pump. The output is going to be 3/4 also. What would be better, two 45's or one 90 degree sweep elbow? Like this:
