RowaPhos OMG I'm freakedddd
Please tell me I am just paranoid.
I just used RowPhos for the first time. Used per the package instructions utilizing the filter sock that comes with it. It said not to wash or rinse the media. As soon as I plopped the sock in my sump there was an explosion of dark colored cloudy stuff that was so bad it limited the visiblity in my tank. No chunks came out just what I am guessing was micro dust or something. Is this a normal reaction using Rowphos????

I used Phosban for a while but I rinsed it first, also against the instructions but I'm glad I did. The first few rinsings created quite cloudy rust colored water.

I have recently used several bags for my 180 gallon. Yes it is common to have initial dust from the bags and media, However if you have a skimmer, the initial dust should not be an issue. Mine cleared the dust from the water within 20 minutes. If I do it again i will rinse though. It doesn't seem to hurt the fish or inverts.

Pheeeehhh thanx. I just could not believe the cloud of rust colored water. It got so bad could hardly see the back side of the tank. But as jnc mentioned about 40 mins later water was clear. I did put in some carbon to help polish.......

i have used this
omg is right, no matter how fine the mesh bag, this still will have tiny black particles come out. The only way is to use a reactor with floss n low flow rate.

Carbon removes organics. I dont think it will help in this case.

Next time you go to use the rowaphos, you don't have to rinse it but it does not say you can't run your tank water through it. I usually start the pump have water run through the reator for a minute, water is clear, tank does not get cloudy at all.

btw, have a spare bucket handy to run the return from your reactor to... maybe run off 2-5 gallons. No problem

I just recharged my phosphate reactor and rinsed it using a brine shrimp net. I think that they say not to rinse as you may use up some of the phosphate binding with tap water (as stated above.) Either way, you'll be fine.
