Hitch Hiker ID? - Possible Apstasia
I found what may be Apstasia on one of my new (2 weeks) mushroom fragments. It's about 1/8" currently and has tiny tenticles, but when disturbed instantly dissapears out of sight.
Does this sound like Apstasia? Or some sort of filter feeding worm? Kind of looks like a tiny feather duster. Will try to get a photo tonight. Phil |

If it looks like a feather duster, it probably is one. Aiptasia has tentacles that are more free-form than any feather-duster I've seen. A picture would help, though.

A quick question since we're talking about feather dusters here. How large do they get? I have five of them living on one piece of rock, the first life in my tank besides a seriously long worm (hiding in the same rock btw).

That depends on the species of featherdust. Some of mine seem to get to 1/2" and stop, but others I've seen are around 6" across, and there are lots of species I haven't seen.

A featherduster looks like a lady's ostrich fan with plume-y stuff, almost like feathers. It's generally blackish, brown with black, or red, a few white and gray.
An aiptasia (rock anemone) has a central disk surrounded by tentacles, and it is sometimes clear, more often brown.

Well, I tried to get a photo, but whatever it is was staying sucked down out of sight. It's still tiny, but is very pale in color, looks like lots of random strands though, no central disk that I could see...but again, it's only 1/8 inch (2-3mm) or less.
I think it's probably a worm though, is seems to have a little hole with a tube extending from it that it disappears down. Phil |

does it shoot instantly out of sight? If so, you have a feather duster. I wouldn't be concerned about it if it is. Most hitchikers won't grow very large, from my limited experience.

Featherdusters don't have random strands, so I'm guessing it's something else. A picture would really be necessary to help much. Google should turn up lots of Aiptasia picture, though.
