As you can see from my information, I am the proud new owner of a 125 gallon tank. I am looking to put color into the tank as well as fish via live rock, coral, and anemone's. Whether this is possible I am unsure. For an example for diversity in live rock, I have been looking around liveaquaria.com for some. I am very interested in having rock from Fiji and the Caribbean put in. Now is it possible to have the two different kinds of rock in the same tank? If thats possible, moving onto scenerio number two. I'd love to have coral in my tank as well. I do plan on having live sand on the bottom for my eel, the little guy will be spoiled to death. But along with the rock, will the coral be able to recieve the proper nutrient's and lighting to survive? Now, if these two work, which would be most excellent, we would move on down the bench to anemone's. I understand they need lighting as well as coral. But is an anemone going to need to recieve different lighting than a coral, thus making it impossible for the two too co-exist in the same tank?

Hello, I think I can answer a few of your questions. Number 1 I wouldnt put an eel in a reef tank. They tend to eat anything that can fit in their mouth. You can have different type of LR in you tank. I have around 3 different kinds. You can also house anemones and coral in one tank under the same lighting. Since you have a large tank you really cant get away with using anything other than MH lighting. HTH

MH if you want sps. that will be awhile, you need a very well established tank. i agree with AquaReeferMan, dont get an eel. anemone dont need rock they do well in sand. Fiji is the best for a reef IMO because of the fact its pourous, light weight, open holes and caves. corolline does well on it, and it stacks well. Kaelini is my other if you dont mind the $$$ factor. IMO these two are the best. live sand will give you bacteria needed to cycle and est. a new tank better and faster. bertoni has a substrate thread that is great. its at the top of this page. "new to the hobby" reasearch, patience, = reef. good luck & REEF-ON!!!

1. yes you can have diff. types of rock in a tank
2. an eel can go in a reef tank but you must watch for certain things. they will eat any fish they can fit into their mouth, and any shrimp. also must make sure the rock is very stable so it won't collapse on them. but for the most part they will leave the corals alone. 3. alot of ppl have anemones and corals together. but have to watch out because anemones will wonder around the tank to find a spot they enjoy and anything in their way they will sting and prob. kill it. also i would wait 8-12 monthes before an anemone as they need almost perfect water. also some anemones like the sand and some like the rock. |
