I have caught some grief over my philosophy but I too have a "Mixed" reef if there ever was and it just likes a lot of new water Even so it is amazing how much gunk builds up in the last chamber of my sump/fuge and virtually none in the first 2 chambers.

Wow, that's funny. The buildup of detritus in my sump all happens (well the majority of it) in the last of the three chambers as well.

When doing water changes I've been using a drill pump. It attaches to a power drill and works pretty good, you can usually get them from most hardwares stores for about $10.
