t8 to 250w halides

Hi
I wonder if anyone could help me, ive bought a set of 250w halides and have been running them a few weeks now. Ive noticed since ive come from t8 to halides, that the sand at the bottom of the tank has started forming a crust on top and the sand has also started going a brown colour. and needs to be fluffed up everyday. the light stand 1 1/2 ft the top of my tank. I wondered if the lights are to close.
Thanks for the help

it's common to get an algae bloom when you upgrade your lights.
