Oops...forgot to rinse the aragonite!
OK, so I am adding sand, and filling up with water. I had a mix of those "aragalive" bags of "live sand" in water, no need to rinse that. But then I had some other dry "non-live" aragonite sand that I added, and I just added that straight too. Now when I added water, I have a cloudy, milky mess. I have about a third of the water in there (tank is a 240 gal). Should I just go ahead and finish adding the water so I can get my pumps working, stick some filter floss in the path and try to filter it all out, or would I be better off draining the water "rinsing" it that way?

Go ahead and add the rest of the water. If you wait for it to settle down and then add it, it will just be cloudy again.

Seriously, there was maybe a minute between my misfire (damn browser keeps moving the cursor on me) and the completed re-edit. I can't believe someone actually jumped in to read a thread as lame as this one that quickly!

Well, I'm not having much luck filtering this crap out. I hooked up a Magnum 350 canister filter and ran that for a couple days. It was much clearer this morning, but I'm pretty sure that's more due to the dust settling on the surface of the sand than the actual filter....I stireed up the sand and it was just as milky as before. I don't think it really helps me to let it settle out, as I have a pair of gold-striped maroon clowns which love to kick up the sand. If they they do that in this tank as it is now, I won't see anything for days afterward. I'm going to try putting a filter sock over the drain, see if that helps. Other than that...anyone have any other ideas? This is really starting to annoy me!

As the bacteria build up colonys and establish themselves they will help "weigh" down the silt. I actualy did this on purpose. Did not rinse the sand at all because I wanted the "mud". Took about a week for it to totally settle out.
Some of it can be removed by putting a micron cartridge in your magnum, but it will plug up fast. Just give it time. (dont ya just hate when people say "just give it time"?)

Hmm, so maybe I should go ahead and put my live rock in? I was holding off, but if the bacteria will help maybe that is a mistake.
I do have the micron cartridge in the Magnum. And yeah, I do hate the "give it time," although its probably the right answer! jds Quote:

I mixed up the salt, waited a day, added the sand , waited a day then put some rocks in.
Nothing like waiting when you want to see fish and coral now!!! But as has been said many times nothing good happens fast.
