I have one for about 6 months now. Looks like it's grown a bit. I heard the orange ones do better than the blue ones, maybe because they don't get as big so don't need as much food. I don't know what it is eating but I figure if it's growing it must be eating something.

What I understand about them starfishes is that they suffer quite abit when exposed to air. That it isn't so much staving to death that kills them as it is poor shipping and accimation practices. If you get one that was collected properly and take care not to expose it to the air during acclimation you are ahead of the game.

What size tank is appropriate for one of these? Seems to me that would make a big difference in whether or not they get enough food.

I don't know what size, but I would think you'd need a much bigger one for the blue linckias since they get SO much bigger than the orange ones.

Both blue and orange need plenty of algae to forrage for. If you have a very clean tank or too many cleaners (snails, hermits, etc), you risk slow starvation.

The poor reputation for the blue is undeserved. I know many people keep them for a long time. I had one for a couple of years before it died...and I don't think it was any fault of mine.

I now have a blue one that has been doing very well for a couple of months.

I removed 5 large snails to offset the star fish's algea eating. Seemed like a logical step to making sure it had enough food.

I've tried target feeding them... they seem to get scared and move away though.
