I used to have Caulerpa Prolifera, lit 24/7 and it was always fine. Really fast growing. I switched to Cheato, and am not so sure it was worthwhile. It is much slower growing, and is like a ball of filter floss. Stuff accumulates in it even with good flow. I may switch back.

I've had great luck with C. prolifera as well.
I can get my wife to grow you any type you'd like and I'm sure you'd never have any problems with it going sexual on you. |

BTW, are you still growing the Prolifera? I got mine from Florida Pets, but they have been out of it. Any chance your wife could grow me a batch?

Lately it seems that the term caulerpa is being used interchangeably with macroalgae or seaweed. As in, any macro in the trade is being called a caulerpa. It is actually the genus name (Caulerpa) for a group of plants that are, as a whole, green algae, with long invasive rhizomes that form holdfasts/rhizoids to anchor themselves in sand or to rock. There are quite a few forms.
True caulerpa can and will sporulate (go sexual) in conditions that are poor for growth, it is a survival mechanism. Other macroalgae will also sporulate, but not all create such large disturbances like these alga typically do. It may be because aquarists tend to keep larger stands of Caulerpa than of other genus.. perhaps because they are, ultimately, so easy to grow. So, yes Caulerpa can sporulate, so can other macroalga. >Sarah
