What size bulkhead for drain?

I am setting up a 75gal tank with a 40 gal sump/fuge (will hold about 30gal). The pump from the sump will be a Quiet One 2200 and the pump for the closed loop will be a Quiet One 4000. The bulkheads will just have strainers on them, there will be no standpipe. What size bulkhead should i use for drains for each pump?

Thanks

Kyle

Why won't you use a standpipe?

You might as well drill for a 1.5" bulkhead, in case your plans ever change (or when you sell the tank)

I do not want to pay for an internal overflow or two for that matter, and this tank is a commercial display tank so i am not able to put a hang on style overflow.

Should i just run a reducer at the pump since they are 1"?

Should i go with 1" input on the tank istead of the 3/4" that i was planning on doing?

I understand.. are you planning on doing an external durso or just a 90ΒΊ after the bulkhead? I suggest going with an external durso.. I'll search and try to find a picture of it.

I would run 1.5" down to the sump.

On the pump, if its a 3/4" input, definately run 1.5" from the sump to the pump if its external.. Off the pump, run 1.5" all the way up to the tank.. Right before it goes back into the bulkhead, then reduce it down to 1" or 3/4" or whatever you are planning on doing.

What is the reason for running the external durso? The strainers will not be near the top of the tank so they shouldnt suck in any air.

Are you saying that for your sump you are just going to have a bulkhead and strainer and this will be located measurably below the waterline?

If this is the case you will end up with a flood when the pump turns off. If this is not the case - maybe drawing a picture would be good so we can see what you really need?

Actually now that i think about it 1 strainer or maybe an external durso will be near the top of the water level b/c i definetely dont want my entire tank draining in the even of a power outage.

But i am still not sure on the function of the durso.

The durso makes it quiet by sucking in air to mix with the water. Otherwise it will sound like a toilet flushing 24/7

For the closed loop you do not use a durso and you can set the inlet and returns at any height in the tank you want, just note the potential of draining the whole tank in case of a leak.

For the drain to the sump the strainers must be at the aquarium water level (with or wothout durso) as the tank will drain down to whatever the level the strainer is going to be independent of wether you use durso or not.
As the water will drain down to the strainer level there will always be air sucked in with the consequent noise unless you install a durso.

For the drain to the sump use a minimum of 11/2" pipe and to prevent cavitation for the pump inlet pipes also I would recommend 11/2" for the returns you can use 1" up to the tank from there you can continue 1" or reduce to two 3/4" if you want more than one outlet.
