Newbie HELP please

I just set up a 40 gallon long tank last week and bought about 40 pounds of LR from a guy that shut down his tank. Lots of the rock were a nice purple in color ( I assume that's coraline algae) which now started to get patches that turn a pale purple then grey/almost white and then it flakes of the rock. How can I stop that since I really like the nice dark purple color. When the rock was transported from his to my place it was out of the water for no more then an hour. Please help and let me know what I need to do. The pH was tested last week and was at 8.1. I don't know about ammonia but nitrite is 0 and nitrate is about 20. I can go to the store tonight and have the water tested again but would like to know what exactly I should get tested. There are no fish in it just 4 Turbo snails for the past 2 days. HELP PLEASE

Temperature must not exceed 85 degrees. High temperatures cause bleaching. Use a fan in your tank area to prevent this.

Thanks for all the comments and I'll check for Calcium anyways and hopefully it won't all die off and come back soon as well.

The die off is b/c of exposure to air. In my tank you can clearly see the coraline ring around the top of the tank where I do water changes. I only do them once a month but that small amount of time that it is exposed to air is enough to keep in from growing. Just give it 2-3 months and it will be back in full force. Good Luck with the new Tank.

Thanks so much everybody. Makes me feel a lot better knowing that it is normal since it was out of the water.
