nigers

Post your experiences with niger triggers in a reef tank. Any problems with inverts (esp. tiny ones such as sexy shrimps) or corals? compatability with other fish? I just saw a 1'' niger trigger at a LFS and I'm thinking of adding it to my reef. (75g)

I think you will be taking a chance. I would say that the likelyhood is that your shrimp will eventually become trigger food, but there is a chance it will leave them alone.

I think it would leave your coral alone, it will eat the shrimp, but it shouldn't matter because niger triggers get way too big for a 75

Oh, yeah, I missed the part about it being a 75 gal... That is much to small for this fish. I am also not a fan of getting a fish small and moving it when it gets bigger.

well smaller fish tends to be cheaper, and placing it in a smaller tank untill it matures prevents aggression towards it from bigger tankmates. maybe i'll pull out an old 29g and dedicate it to him only. i really like my inverts.

I have mine in a fish only and he is vicous (sp?), I saw him eat a small anenome off a rock, spit it out and leave it dead (came with the liverock). He also becomes extremely aggresive during feeding, before he actually eats anything he scares all the other fish into the rocks and then eats.

I have one in my reef tank (about 2.5") never had a problem with the cleaner shrimp that were in the tank before I got him. Put 2 more cleaner shrimp in the tank and they were gone by morning (don't know if it was him but pretty sure). I swear by mine but would not reccommend it in a little tank.

Adult Niger Triggers approach 20" in length.
This one is in a 320 gallon aquarium and it just finished eating a Damselfish it cornered, but it doesn't bother the cleaner shrimps, hermit crabs or starfish.

get a blue jaw or a pink tailed triggerit is still a risk but they tend to be less aggressive

Is it really that important ot get a fish because it looks cool if you can't provide the right space for it?

I had a Niger that ripped of a flasher wrasse's pectoral fin... he died shortly after. (sold the niger after that)

He was only about 2.5" as well.

more reef-safe triggers are;

crosshatch, sargassums, etc.

Nigers are still mean triggers.
