Acclimate to hypo.
Is it possible to acclimate a fish into a qt that is running hypo? I have a fish going through hypo now and I had purchased a fish a few weeks back that was out of stock. It will be shipped tomorrow and would like start hypo on it.
Thanks, Jeff |

Do you have another tank to keep him in temporarily? I've read that fish can tolerate a drop in salinity pretty fast, but the fastest I have seen documented for a controlled drop is 36 hours.

What if I put him in a rubbermaid tub and dropped the salinty over 48 hours then put him in the qt tank. The tub would have no filter just powerhead and heater and display tank water. Do you think I would get a spike in ammonia in 48 hours? I am just wondering if moving him around so much would be too much stress. Any other ideas?
Thanks, Jeff |

I think that sounds like a reasonable plan. The rubbermaid would have opaque walls which would reduce the stress a little. I don't think you'd have a real ammonia problem over a 48 hour period.

I take a day or two to reduce salinity but thats as much to acclimate/preserve the bacteria as the fish. Many aquarist will simply drop fish into their hypo tanks and I have yet to hear of anyone who had said they had a problem. |

Anybody else think it would be o.k. to acclimate right into hypo?

This is an issue which has been discussed on the disease forum from time to time.
The old rule of thumb was slow acclimation and many aquarist (including me) have been doing that for yrs. However some professional aquarist have pointed out that they do not slowly acclimate to hypo and have never had a problem ... during the discussion Terry Bartelme (author of the 5 part ich article on Adv Aquar mag) indicated that he does not believe prolonged acclimation is necessary - fish can tolerate decreases in salinity and he believes it actually reduces stress. |
