aiptasia removal

I noticed there are 3 little aiptasia thingys on one of my rocks, they are very small, I just got a needle from the pharmasy, i was going to try the vinegar method, just fill the needle with vinegar and inject the vinegar into the aiptasia? this all I need to do? the vinegar is safe in the tank?

thanks

You have the right idea. Don't put much vinegar in the syringe as it's very easy to slip and inject too much. I'm not a chemistry major but too much would not be good.

two words: peppermint shrimp!

I tried controlling aiptaisia a few ways, but two of those little guys, haven't seen one since. They did the job in about a week too!

I've had success with both Peppermint shrimp and with a paste made from Kalk and RO water.

Two more words: No Vinegar. Vinegar will lower your pH. A teaspoon of kalk (calcium hydroxide) and a cup of RO water will do it every time. Besides, kalk is good for your tank. I just nailed three of them. Pep shrimp never did it for me. A sure fire bet for me has always been the CBB's, (Copperband Butterfly's). I have one on video eating up and aip. I was late to work trying to film it. My wife called me a nerd.

Holland MI huh?? Anything for a fellow Michigander. Originally from the Lansing area. Anyway. You can try the local grocery store (Oh I so miss Meijers!!) and look for this stuff called Mrs Wages Pickling Lime. Same stuff, but a little less potent as it is the food grade stuff. Your local fish store will carry Kalkwasser made by Two Little Fishes or even Kent.

I lived in east lansing for about 2 years, was contracted to the department of treasury doing computer stuffs, was pretty nice there, lived right near the meijer in east lansing :P

I will pick up some of that mrs wages pickling lime and give that a go, I just tried injecting them with hot water, they close up the second you get near em, plus they are really small.

I hope the peppermint shrimp will make a meal out of them

Have your camera ready for the kalk shot. Turn off all powerheads and return pumps, try to make the water as still as possible. Them little buggers will suck it in like it's brine shrimp and then regret every second of it afterwards. They expand and then implode. Cool stuff.

I got some Pickle Crisp, Meijer did not have the mrs wages brand, but this shows ingredients as Calcium Chloride, how much do I use to get rid of the aiptaisia? Never used this stuff before, can I use this to raise calcium in the water too?

thanks

I read somewhere that Peppermind eat aiptasia like candy...its true. I have two, and have no problems. they are pretty reef safe, although I once walked in on one munching on my frog spawn...just keep them well fed, and by that, I mean feeding your tank at least once a day, since they eat what the fish dont...but it just so happens that the one day I went 2 days, was the day my Frog Spawn almost became no more.

One thing so about Peppermint, you may wish to supplement your tank with Iodine, as they need it to shed (molt) and grow. I use Kent Iodine, and drop 2 drops a week in the sump to dilute...the Xenia love it too. The jury is still out whether or not Iodine is even helpful to Xenia or Shrimp...but, so far my tank seems to respond well to a couple drops a week.

Good luck!

I have 2 pep shrimp and they are not doing anything for control. I've tried the Joe's Juice and is hit and miss.
I've mixed Kalk and a little better than Joe's Juice. don't stick the needle in the aiptasia, just squirt it in the center where they can suck it in. They will and impload.
