New to the forum & saltwater

HI, my name is Liz. I have had a freshwater tank for about 12 years now. I recently moved and "rehomed" my fish, (Oscars) so I have been fishless for about 2 months. I am thinking of setting up my tank as saltwater this time. I really ahve no idea where to start.

The tank is 65 gallons. I currently have a Fluval 404 filter. I know I will need new lighting, but will the filter still be OK? I think I still have a Sea Clear sump in my garage from a previous tank, it should be the right size (if I need it) So, where is a good place for me to start?

you can do saltwater no problem but you need...

1. salt mix... there are a lot of different types out there so it up to you what to use...

2. you need live rock they say you want 2 pounds of rock per gallon of water

3. you need to cycle your tank...( leave the tank alone( but do water changes) with no livestock as water levels become acceptable for fish)

4. you dont need a skimmer but it helps

5. you can use a hob(hang on the back) filter...

6. the more water movement the better.. if you can put a couple of maxijets or such in there that would be better...

7. fish depends on how much filtration you have.. the more filters the more fish you can have... for a 65 gallon i thing 10-12" of fish will be fine...

If you keep your 404 I'd take out any "Bio-Max" type filter material (the white rings) and run just Carbon in it.
