pH levels?

What exactly is the pH levels suppose to be on a 46 bow? 8.3? 8.5? 8.4 says its ideal... its at 7.8 at the moment and the guy at the pet store told me that is what killed my cardinal fish and my coral bandid shrimp? But yet are emeralds were eating everything they got there grabby lil' claws onto... I dont kno!

And how exactly do I raise it if its not enough pH??

well the ph should generally be at about 8.2, one question i have to ask you is what time did you check the ph at. Ph generally shifts though out the day, itll be low in the moring because the excess levels of Co2 (7.6) and high at night because of the excess levels of oxygen (8.4). these number i have put here are generally what my tank is like in the morning and at night, the first time i saw this i thought that every thing was going to die.
