CC mixed with LS

Hi There, is it OK to mix crushed coarl with live sand in a FOWLR setup?

The problem with crushed coral is that it traps detritus. Also, most of the sandbed organisms that clean up the substrate prefer a finer sand. If you're concerned about the substrate blowing around there are alternatives to crushed coral.


BTW, over time the fine sand will sink and the crushed coral will be the primary top substrate.

Aragonite is in crushed coral. Its like asking if a car is a Ford. Fords come in lots of shapes and sized as does aragonite. Not all sand is aragonite as not all cars are fords. google caribsea and look at their saltwater substrate line for some examples of types of aragonite.

Aragonite and calcite are the two main forms of calcium that marine organisms use for skeletons.
