fish dying....help
i am currently having a bloom of hair and cyano in reef. it a 29 long with a few soft corals and 3 fish (small cole tang, watchman goby and a p clown) a bubble anemone that split about 6 months ago, and a pretty good clean up crew. i use just a protien skimmer. i have not run carbon (ever) and i use phosphogaurd. i use purple up and chemi-vit, and i feed about every 2 weeks which consist of froozen shrimp cubes(1/4 cube). i occasionall drop a pellet or 2 of dry food. last week, the phosphates were almost zero. no3 nh4 etc all 0 or very close to it.
i used chemi-clean for the algea monday night. tuesday night the cole tang was dead. slim coat looked great. died with mouth closed but gill gapping. he was removed immediatly. wednesday at lunch, my clown is dead. any ideas? i will retest everything tommorow. this is a tank that is about 16 months old with a 1" sand bed.! i took a hang on the back filter off about 3 weeks ago and let some trash from the bottom get in the tank. i also (about a month ago) went from 2 bulb vho to a four bulb. 2-50/50, 2 actinic. photo period is about 9 hours. oh...i also do 20% water changes about every 10-12 days. get r/o water from LFS. salinty is 1.026 any help appreciated! seems like everything went south after chemi-clean!? |

well it seems like your doing everything right, cept im just curious if you made a mistake ("i feed about every 2 weeks which consist of froozen shrimp cubes(1/4 cube)".) cause that right there is possible your problem. specially with the tang as they are grazers which need alot of food.

From what I understand, Chemi-clean reduces the oxygen levels in the tank and you must do the water change recomended on the package. If you already had low oxygen this could put you over the edge. I have used this product successfully twice but I did keep a close eye out for signs of stress in the fish. Dosing properly is important. A little goes a long way. I am sorry to hear about your fish!
Oh, and feeding every 2 weeks isn't going to cut it. How about every 2 days or every day... That was probably a typo but I just had to add that fish need a lot more food than that (in case). |

would they die with mouths open if it was due to low oxygen?

Fish often die with mouths open.
And tangs have about the highest oxygen requirement of all common tank fish.
