Live sand bad long term disaster?

Does anyone feel keeping live sand is a bad idea in the long term. I keep a bare bottom tank and now am currently interested in creating a refugium since my wet dry cant get NItrates down only ammonia and nitrites. So besides chaeto what should go in the fuge? Should i use sand and if so how often would you chnage it or what to do with it in terms of maintainance.

I think having a DSB in a fuge is a good idea. Here are some of the reasons why. Having a DSB in a fuge is much nicer then the main display because in a Fuge it is much easier to change when needed. So IMO i would put a DSB with some nice aragonite, a few pieces of LR ( not to much ), and some chaeto.

As far as the DSB, since it is in your fuge and it would be easy to access when needed to change, i would go with a nice 5inch + sand bed. As far as changing the sand bed, i my self never tried this so i would not know how often you would need to change it. Good luck!.
