Post Kent Salt Killed Acros In Display Tank

Is anyone having a problem with KENT SALT. I own a reef store
called AQUARIUM DEPOT in Ontario Canada. After selling 6 pails of salt to our customers we noticed very similar problems with low
KH and very high Calcium levels. When we ruled out all other
test's we then tested the salt in our own display aquarium and
discovered that the KENT SALT was the problem. We tested the
salt from two seperate test kits to make sure our results were accurate. Our conclusions of the test's were KH @ 4 and
Calcium @ 600 . We lost a lot of Acroporas from our display aquarium some of which were hard to get. We tested a few random pails of Kent salt all with the same result. We contacted KENT and explained our problem with the salt and provided the batch
number . There response was that the batch test that they had
done was good, I was given the impression that there has been
no problem with there salt. KENT explained to me that I must send a sample of salt to them to test. Which we did three weeks
a go. We have not got a answer at all. We sell about 30 to
40 pails of salt a month . So if KENT does not handle this problem
with some decentcy ,I will never sell there product again.
I have 26 pails of KENT salt in stock and I refuse to sell it to
any of my customers because it is moraly wrong.

I am in relatively close contact with a Kent representative. According to him, the new lot that is being shipped (I can't remember the number on the bucket) supposedly has this problem fixed. The new salt will be made in the Oceanic factory (NOT the Coralife one) and will have the same finer consistency of Oceanic salt.

That's very nice to hear but I was lied to by KENT. My store moves a lot of product and I don't like to be misslead. Nobody is
perfect we all make mistakes but come on. If you are having problems admit it and slove it . I would never treat my customers
like that. I will be contacting KENT on monday, I will post there response.

Who was the representative you spoke to? Our rep was honest from the very beginning. In fact, he is a higher-up and actually was one of (if not THE one) to push for the fix to be made. Do post the response--if it is not satisfactory, I can submit the answer to my rep (he can have something done about it (hopefully).

i am one of those that had some of the problem salt. however im not a store owner. i can feel your pain, but i test every bag or bucket of salt i by regaurdless of the brand. that saved me from losing anything. i know its very time consuming for a store employee to test every batch of salt, and costly to the owners to pay someone to test it. but it needs to be done. mistakes happen. i would not like to have been lied to, so i would probably go off on the Kent rep if i had been. when i talked to them they were upfront with me, and said they were having some problems with the salt. the paid for me to ship a sample to them, they found it was bad, they shipped me a new bucket of salt instead of a bag. that bucket tested fine and will last me for a long time . i am glad to see they switched manufactures of the salt though, again. thats just my experience with Kent.

sounds like its time to dump Kent products......not the best company to deal with.....

its unfortunate that you cant count on manufactors to stand by their product and produce quality...always test first...add some buffer and levels will stabilize....

Just give it some time before you say that. The problems resulted during the turmoil of moving all of their facilities from Acworth, GA to Wisconsin--production quality became lax, etc. as well as many, many other problems (and not just with their salt from what I am told). I always test our salt batches before i mix them, so I have avoided some problems. I will test one of the new batches soon and will let everyone know what is going on.
