LR coraline gone orange!
Yesterday I added 0.002 of salt and my coraline on one of the rocks have gone orange, not the whole rock but a fair part of it. Also two of my five polyps have been closed. This has been going on for 16 hours. Some of the coraline has comeback but some hasn't changed a bit. There are no fish, only rocks and five polyps. What is there I can do?

Raphael did you use Oceanic salt? I had a similar problem happen when I tried there product.
After about 24 hours it dessimated my tank and killed almost eveything in it. This was after a 5 gallon water change in a 55 gallon tank. I've since crossed Oceanic salt off my list of safe products. If this is another brand using calcium/magnesium supplements to beef up there salt you may want to go back to the regular non-additive salts. The orange your seeing is most likely the coraline literally being burned up. I eventually had to tear down my tank a total of 5 times within a 2 month period because it never came back correctly. Even after the 5th time it still wasn't reacting very well. The tank was traded and used as a reptile tank finally. |

I added without water because I thought nothing would happen since there are no fish. Will the LR go back to normal? Most of the orange is beige now.

Yeah, it's dying. It will regrow eventually if you keep your water stats good. That's what my coralline would look like after my starfish was chewing on it for a while....then it will turn white and disappear. I got rid of that starfish since and all has regrown in less than 3 weeks.

They may.
NEVER add salt directly to the tank. There are some major chemical reactions that occour when that salt hits the water. Those chemical reactions are deadly to most anything while they are happening, that's why most people mix their salt for 24 hours or more before adding to the tank.

No worries Raphael, it's all a learning process. Most of what you lost will probably return given time.
Just remember to pre-mix your salt with water ahead of time. Using an extra heater as well in your mixing container will also give you a more accurate salinity level reading. |

harsh response for oceanic salt. I have been using it since the day my LFS in Denver received their shipment (about 2 yrs). I have never seen any ill effects other than my Calcium going to 420 w/o supplement. I have good growth on my sps and softies. Oceanic has been a great product for me for me.

believe it is due to the fact he dumped it right into the tank.

jbittner, after contacting a rep. from Oceanic and then recieving a very nasty letter from them which I posted at reefcentral, I was threatened with prosecution.
Being a customer of there's (even if only temporarily) I would have expected a better response and a willingness to at least find out what happened. Instead I was treated like a criminal for there own inactions. I received a lot of e-mail from others who had similar repsonses and identical results. The only summation I could come up with was there was a poorly mixed bacth that was shipped out to several different areas in the U.S. Had they been willing to work with me or even taken an interest I would have had no problem but when I get insulted and then threatened????? |

Wow, that being the cause or not, thier response is enough for me to cross them off my list too....

Harsh.

I also had a less than desirable outcome with the Oceanic salt. I also bought it the first day it hit the floor of my LFS. My tank went completely upside down. I lost fish, coral, and I couldn't stabilize the levels. (probably due to the livestock dying off). This was all on a tank that had been setup for about a year or so and very healthy. If you do a search, you will find a whole other group that had a bad experience. I think there must have been a bad batch that made it out of the factory because I have not heard of anyone having any problems lately. -=E=-

What was harsh about it?
All I stated where facts and results. The only opinion I used was concerning supplemented salts being (at least somewhat) unstable compared to non-supplemented salts. |

I just wanted to point out that not everyone has the same experiences in this hobby. Everyone does something a little different in their "ecosystem". Different things work for different people. I use oceanic--change 10% monthly and use no additional ca+-- and I have never seen a problem. Did you ever test the batch of salt that you added to your tank--just wondering if it was the batch or something wrong with the salt in general.

It was tested only sparingly for normal levels. The only thing that stood out was the high Ca level out of one water sample.
The other part I didn't add was I did add some amt directly to the sump (less than 1/4 cup) and also in the original pre-mix bucket there was a scummy brown film that developed immediately. Even after the cleaning the bucket several times the same film continued to reappear. I'm not going to go through with another debate about this. These experiences were corroberated enough for me to know it wasn't an isolated incident. The loss bothered me, the treatment by Oceanic really ticked me off. That part is not debatable. |
