Ozone/redox + yellow tang problem

Hi,

I have a problem with my yellow tang. If I run my ozoniser (5mg/hr on 100 gallon tank) through my skimmer and raise the mv past 320mv the fish's respiration rate increases and he flicks a bit. All other fish are fine ( Anthias, flame angel, cardinals).

If I turn off the ozoniser and wait for the mv to drop to 315mv the fish recovers.

I am running carbon on my system but not on the outlet from my skimmer, I also run Polyfilter. I can never smell ozone, not even from the top of the skimmer cup. I have tested for ammonia because I thought that the ozone may have killed my filter bacteria but this is 0.

The only thing that I can think of is that the increased MV irritates his gills.

Has anybody had a fish that has been extra sensitive to mv increase? and does anybody know what the symptoms are if ozone is in the water?

Thx

D

I would definately try running the output water from your Skimmer through carbon and see if it makes a difference. I think it's residual Ozone in the tank irritating the fish.

you sure its a 5mg/hr? At that sort of dose, and a tank that size, it should take a couple hours to raise the ORP more than a couple points.

Its not residual ozone, as ozone only has about a 5 second half life in salt water. Carbon isnt there to take out ozone, its there to take out the ozone byproducts, like hypobromide.

I am sure that it is 5mg/hr as the unit is turned right down (50mg/hr unit). And yes it does take a couple of hours to raise a few points as I have just added the unit and wanted to start slowly. The Redox probe has recently been calibrated also, so it is accurate and the out flow of the skimmer passes through polyfilter.

I am thinking of trying a reactor to run the ozone through instead but I doubt the problem will go away.

I have had the yellow tang 8 years and never have run ozone before.
