hob refuge?
are these as effective as the in sump models, i am looking at one with 24/7 lighting

How effective a refugium is depends on the size. More gallons=more macroalgae=less nutrients. The HOB refugium would be more effective than the in sump if it is bigger than the in sump refugium.

Not only preference but what you actuallywant to use the fuge for.
Basically the HOB fuges are for smaller tanks without sumps, so you could have some nutrient export. If you want a fuge for pods production and nutrient export, than I reccomend you go with the largest size fuge you can. A in the sump version in my opinion works very well, I made one myself out of a 40 breeder tank and love it. The only problem I have heard of with HOB fuges is they can leak and they bow out. For the money I would build your own to your liking. |

I have the AquaClear medium HOB and it works great! I had to custom make a black acrylic cover so the light in the 'fuge at night didn't get into the tank (and my living room), but if you can do that it's a simple way to go that works.
