starting out

i have brackish water puffers ( green spotted puffers) who as adults move on to full marine water. its time for them to be brought up slowly to full marine. i have talked with many people who keep puffer fish and they say to use live sand and live rock as it will provide a much healthier home. with that said im not even sure if that could be concidered reef keeping lol. but here i am anyways. now from what i have read, after the live rock is introduced, cured and the tank is cycled, it develops many different kinds of life forms. now the puffer fish MAY nip at these and eventually kill them. im not sure because i havent even set up a marine tank yet. so if anyone knows anything about this combination of fish and rock id love to hear what you have to say. also on the flip side is will any of these things be harmfull to the fish. things i need to look out for and may need to remove. im quite puzzled lol thanks, greg

The most beneficial aspect of live rock is the bacteria that will aid in the nitrogen cycle. The puffers can't kill this, so you don't need to worry about your live rock becoming dead rock.

You may get hitchhikers on your rock, but these are usually worms and the occasional crab or snail. It's a good idea to do some night stalking while the rock is curing, but I don't think you'll have anything to worry about. Good luck w/ those puffers!
