is it possible to cycle w/o ammonia spike?

I set up my 30 gal 2 weeks ago using 10lbs cured and 10 lbs fresh LR. The fresh stuff was full of lil goodies and algea. I used 20 lbs live sand put it in at the same time along w/ 10 hermits. No ammonia spike yet

Yes, it's possible if your LR was truly cured.

My tank is almost 2 months old. I remember that I never really got an ammonia spike, the highest I think it got was about 0.25. I have 30lbs of live rock I got from liveaquaria.com.

I sort of got concerned with the lack of an ammonia spike so what i did was put some ammonia in a cup of tank water and tested it just to make sure the test kit was working. I had major ammonia reading during that particular test.

Also, when I started "feeding" my tank with some frozen mysis shrimp did I see some ammonia during my water tests.
