Converting a Jewel RIO 180 to marine - tips?
Hi All,
I have been keeping tropicals for a while now but have been tempted to try marine. I have been reading about it for a while and am thinking of converting my jewel rio 180 (101cm x 50cm x 41cm)to marine. I will use a Aquamedic Biostar Flotor protein skimmer with prolly 20kg of live rock. However, when it comes to lighting im un-decided on what to do. I was thinking of using the current like fittings with arcadia marine blue T8 bulbs and then maybe having 2 55W T5 power compacts....do you think this would be sufficient? I am worried as to were the best place to mount them is to make sure that there is sufficient light distribution. The reason for this is so that I can turn the Blue lights on first and then the power compacts later to try and make change in light not too harsh. Has anyone tried converting a RIO 180? If so how did it go? I am looking to just keep soft corals and a few fish. Thanks, David |

To Reef Central i wouldn't see why it wouldn't work as alot of ppl turn their old freshwater tanks into marine tanks. the only thing to watch out for is if the tank ever had meds in it before as in copper. those meds can be very harmful to inverts and corals. the lighting will be good for softies however i never heard of 55 watt t5 lights |

Thanks for the reply, i have used copper based meds in the tank before. Is it possible to remove it?
The T5 tubes which are 55W are the power compact type. http://www.aquatics-online.co.uk/lis...tp=42&rets=131 |

wow those bulbs are new to me but still should work great for what you want. as for removing copper use polifilter(sp.) link below, and get a good test kit to check for it. in time it will go away.

I have those bulbs on my setup, different starter to those ones as you can turn the bulbs off individually, they have worked great for me and do not take up a lot of room, and the bulbs are really cheap and last a long time

I am not sure of the make I will look when I go home tonight If I remember correctly they are aquarium systems, but to be honest with you I would go with those ones, as when you are on a timer it makes no difference and mine cost nearly £90 each
