reef sump pre-filter?
I see a lot of tank set-ups without any type of filter media that physically traps sediment. On my 90 gallon reef I am currently using a sump with bio balls and a filter pad. If I were not to use the filter pad like everyone else... how will these physical particles be removed from the tank?

There are big articles all over here about this...This stuff is suspended in the water colum by flow in the tank and then removed via a protien skimmer and LR. Filter media such as bio balls, trap these bad things and over time it accumilates and then starts to do the oppposite of what they are intended for...They will start to drive nitrites through the roof. This is just like anything, people replace the air filter in their car because it gets dirty and clogs up and hurts performace. You can also look at it as a lint trap in the dryer, after a while it fills up and needs to be cleaned. Same with Bio-balls, so alot of people have done away with them
