Calcium Reactor media?

I can just use crushed coral in my new Ca reactor correct? MY dad has 2 5gal buckets of it...is this safe?

I have used nothing but CC in my DIY Ca reactor since I set it up 6 months ago. It has worked great and I have had no problems. Not sure how much of an advantage there is to the media specifically designed for Ca reactors. Maybe some of our more experienced elders can shed some light on this?
