Light Acclimation
Hello everyone I am upgrading my 38g with 192watts of PC, and I will be transferring all of my existing corals , to my new 75g with 500watts of MH it consist of (2) 2 250watt 20k Coralvue bulbs, I was told that I need to acclimate my corals or they may bleach I have mostly LPS's what is the best way to do this acclimation and is it even necessary.
Thanks Sam L. |

It will definitely be necessary! Let me tell you what I did, then you can draw your own conclusions.
I moved everything from a 75 GAL with 190 W total PC lights to a 200 GAL with 3 x 175 W MH. I put the corals on the bottom of the tank, egg crate on the tank and then 7 layers of fiberglass window screen on top of that. Removing 1 sheet of screen per week, everything STILL bleached! I say take your time and do the light acclimation. It'll make it easier on your corals (and you). If I could do it over again, I'd use 14 layers of screen and maybe a shorter photo period. HTH

mh and do the process all over again do u think thats a better idea or should i do both bulbs at once. |

I figure that'd probably be OK, but then you are kind of duplicating your work. The screen directly under the bulb will block 1 or 2 no problem. But do what makes you feel safer. I think either way will work.
Also, I read on wetwebmedia.com that if you use 14 layers, you should pull off a layer every day or 2 instead of per week. GOOD LUCK! And BTW, just in case noone's ever told you... ![]() To Reef Central

I recently transferred the contents of my 72bowfront w/ 260 watts PC to my new 125 tall w/ 1080 watts mh/vho. I put all corals (including sps) in their permanent position and put 3 layers of plastic window screen over the top. I removed one layer of screen every 3 days. No problems at all and everything is starting to grow like crazy. I think sometimes bleached corals after a tank transfer are due to something other than lighting upgrades... be sure all tank params are the same from old tank to new.
Good luck and congrats on the upgrade. =)
