Filter socks & micro bubbles
Would a filter sock over the skimmer return and overflow plumbing work as well as a set of baffles?

A lot of people report here that they do. The thing to remember when using a filter sock is to wash it out regularly so that it doesn't begin to become a bio-filter and generate nitrates. It isn't a big problem but it does require some maintenance that the baffles don't.

I really wouldn't call it "washing," so I don't think that you'd have to have others on hand. Rinsing it well under the sink faucet will clean it well enough to be put right back on.

I disagree, I have a few dozen of them (Idont want to wash them every week, and I run 3 at a time) I have to run them through the washing machine 2 times using bleach the 1st. They are impossible to clean by hand, they trap particles down to 100 microns. If you are planning to run 1 sock I'd buy atleast 6 of them this way when you wash them you arent wasting a load of water to wash 1 sock, they are fine if they dry out while waiting for enough to do a load in the wash machine.
