natural light
anyone ever try natural light shutes over reef tank???

I never have but I have heard of people doing it. In fact I think a former TOTM used natural for some of its lighting, I just cant remember which one, It was a monster though.

I have thought about doing this myself, except that where I am in upstate New York, there can be days on end without sunshine during the winter. The other issue is that unless the sun is directly overhead, how much light actually makes its way down the shutes? The other consideration is what portion of the sun's light spectrum is being filtered out by the cover to the shute? Astronomers can track the sun with their telescopes. Perhaps a mirror system could be rigged that does the same thing.

thank you all for your responses.....I read about a MD in the state of PA that created some shutes(he did use some kind of mirror system) and he used it on half his tank while using regular light fixtures on the other side(vho and MH).. He reports major growth on the natural light side compared to the other.... I see what I can find and let you all know.. thanks again
