Seio pumps

I'd like to increase and improve the flow in my BB 65g. I don't really have the budget for Tunze streams, but Seios are within my reach. The tank is primarily LPS with some softies, zoas and shrooms, so I don't want to blow the corals around too much, but ATM I feel like I have barely enough flow -- there are still little detritus piles settling on the bottom that need to be siphoned, and I'd rather everything was up in the water column for the skimmer to pick up. Right now I'm using four MaxiJets - 2 x 1200, 1 x 900 and 1 x 400 - along with an AquaClear 70 refugium, a 300gph canister filter and a Remora skimmer. Everything together, not including the skimmer, moves 1526gph, ~23x the tank volume.

I did a search and read that Seio pumps don't create as much movement as might be expected. Would two Seio 820s, which move 840gph each, be enough for a 3' 65g? With the 820s I'd have 35x turnover, does this sound appropriate, or would a third 820 or two of the next size up be better? I'm not familiar with the design, so any advice is appreciated. Here's a picture of the pump in question, very unusual compared to most PHs I've seen:

AcBlinky, no one really runs them like thay. They pull off the whole bottom half, and the whole thing is basically open. Looks kinka like a tunez.

I'd save your money, and just convert one of the Maxijets into a maxistreams.

The seios are great pumps, but in retrospect, had Maxistreams been around, I never would have bought mine.

I would go with the 1100 model and run them stream style.

@RichConley - Ahhh! That explains the look. So it's a better idea to buy a MaxiJet mod kit? I'm not DIY savvy enough to totally do it myself, but I could definitely mod the MJs with a kit, and IIRC it's about the price of one Seio for enough parts to mod either 2 or 4 MJs. That does sound smarter, and more cost effective.

If I do end up going with the seios I'll get the 1100s.

Thanks for the input guys

I just put a used 1100 in my tank and physically it's frakken huge compared to the 620 it replaced. I'd go with the MJ's if I was to do it over again. Or the Nanostreams from Tunze.

Hmm, thanks, I hadn't even thought about their size. I read through the directions on www.mjmods.com and they scare me a bit, but I think I'll probably buy a kit and try it out. The worst that will happen is I'll botch it and ruin an inexpensive pump.

For now, I replaced the MJ400 with the MJ900 from my 21g (that tank has more than enough flow even with the 400) and spent an hour moving pumps around to optimize the flow and try to get the detritus up into the water column.

Thanks to all for the feedback, it was very helpful.

I have 2 820's and really like them. That being said i'm buying 2 Maxijet 1200's and will have the kits done on them. want to see how good they are!

I have Maxijets and love them so this should be cool!

I use 2 1500's in a 75 sps tank mounted on a magnet mount and I like them. They produce excellent flow. Seios use a "turbine" to propell the water instead of a "propellor". They are not any larger than a Tunze. But much cheeper. Do a search in the used section, I see them for sale often.
