To Reef Central

Some initial advice I'd offer is:

1) don't skimp and buy things "to get by for now" if you can possibly avoid it. You'll spend more in the long run.

2) make sure your plan considers what you will keep (including future growth), how much lighting they will need, and how much circulation they will need. Planning in advance saves money and makes for a cleaner set up.

3) while you'll find a plethora of opinions, often conflicting, on these boards about filtration (and every other topic for that matter) the common ground is to establish how you will break down and remove waste. Some filtration methods for fresh water and salt water fish tanks are not well thought of here. The largest degree of agreement is that live rock is the best method for nitrification (breaking down ammonia into nitrates).

4) check out Waterkeeper's threads for more "newbie" information about reefing.

5) pretty soon you'll begin to realize you need to learn more about reef chemistry -- check out Randy's Reef Chemistry forum and read as much as you can absorb there.

Good luck and have fun!
