PVC size for mag 7
Hello,
I set up a swcd on my tank and plumbed it with pvc. The pump makes a quite a bit of noise and seems to be straining. Im also disappointed with the flow or lack there of. I used 3/4" pvc all the way to the intake on the pump and then 1/2" from the pump to the swcd. From the swcd it is 1/2" all the way to the returns in the tank. Would 1" pipe really make that much of a difference? Please let me know what you think. Thanks |

I have a SCWD on my return and am using 3/4" PVC all through, but then again I am running a Mag 9.5... I'm not sure how much increasing the PVC size would affect the flow here, but I would guess not that much.

Double the outlet size which is 1" for a Mag7. The SCWD is a flow killer as is the 1/2" plumbing. I had a Mag9 plumbed with 3/4" and a SCWD. The flow was cut down to ~ the same level as a Mag5. Mag pumps in general dont do well with head loss and a SCWD adds a lot. For a mag to flow well, it really needs wide open plumbing. 2x outlet size and not a lot of restrictions.
As far as noise goes, I've owned a mag3/5/7/9.5 and the Mag7 was by far the worse of them. I couldn't stand it any longer so I replaced it with an Eheim 1260. MUCH quieter and a ton more flow.
