Dwarf angels and clams.
Just wanted to take an informal poll of what experiences people have had with these two.
I already know the guidelines, but would like to hear actual experiences of disaster and success. Specifically coral beauties and flames, but in general as well. Thanks... |

I don't have a coral beauty or flame, but I do have a potters in a 36 gal tank that also houses a T. Crocea clam.
In 6 months that they've lived together, the potters angel hasn't touched the clam, or even cared that it exists. Can't offer any more info, but so far so good. |

I had a flame that pestered clams. Like almost all posts regarding Centropyge angels, it's hit and miss.

I have a coral beauty and a 3" Crocea clam in a 75 gal for 3 months now. The fish has been picking from time to time my leather and causes it to retract frequently, but it has never bothered my clam once.

Wow have I heard some horror stories about those fish. I have a customer that had a flame angel for several years in a 125 gallon tank with several different types of coral mixed in. For quite a time we didn't think the little angel was doing any harm to the coral or the clams. Then one day there he was nip nip nip at a stoney. As time went on the flame angel was noticed picking at many corals but not so much the clam amazingly enough. After much effert the fish was caught and removed from the tank. Coral that hadn't opened up for months started coming out and growing. About 5 different coral to be exact. We had no idea just how badly this fish was bothering things until he was removed from the tank.

I have a flame angel and a crocea clam in my 30g L, and it has not picked at my clam... yet. It picks at alot of other stuff, mainly the glass and rocks, but I also have a maze brain that it picks at, candy canes that it constantly harasses, and HAD an open brain that it just about killed. The biggest thing that I can say is that every dwarf angel you get, they are all going to have a different temperment. You might get one that picks at everything, some stuff, or nothing at all. That's just the risk you run in putting a dwarf angel in a tank.

I have a flame angel with 3 croceas and a derasa. The flame occasionally pecks at the clam's shell (and much more rarely, the mantle), but the clams don't seem to mind this. It's only occasional pecks and then he moves on to peck at other stuff. My flame is more of a problem with SPS and Christmas tree worms than with clams.
On a related note, my toadstool leather has been closed up for about a week and a half now. I thought initially that it was too close to the anemone, so I moved it several days ago, but it still isn't opening. I never thought to suspect the flame angel, but now I'll keep an eye on it. |
