are you planning to put this in the tank? Or as a return? I wouldnt put that in the tank...it'd prolly be too big..I've only seen one of the genx pumps and it was rather large, and the gph was like 700ish. If you were to do something like a closed loop (is that the right term? i'm not too sure on those) then it'd prolly be fine. I'd split it tho. And i'd get more flow than just that if this is for your 55. I've got 2 powerheads that do 175 each and one that does 660 and i'm gonna be getting rid of the 2 smaller ones and replacing them w/bigger ones that do like 300. I'm at just under 20 times turnover right now...Shoot for 25 times (which is what i was at till one died on me)

So I'd say that if you're doing that pump, split it (to get a more random flow) and then get another one that does like 3 or 4 hundred. That'd give you around 25 i think (i'm not really adding this up right now..just kinda off the top of my head in comparison to what i've got)

So I could hook this thing up out side of the tank, possibly in my sump, and just put the effluent in the water?

I am completely new to all of this so please be patient.

Right now I have one 170gph powerhead and I was shooting for ten times turnover, but you say I need to shoot for more like 25 times? Thats two 700gph pumps! Holy moly.... any suggestions on how to accomplish this without buying a tractor engine to move the water?

ya i'm not exactly sure how to do it..but it could be done, so i 'll let someone else answer that. And 25 times turnover isnt really that hard to do...you've got a 55 gallon right? What i got is a powerhead thats doing 660 gph and i got a split on it..so its going 2 ways...thats in the middle on the back glass.

Then i got 2 smaller powerheads on each end pointing to the middle. Both do 175 gph...thats all i got and it brings me to 19 times turnover...i'm planning to just ditch the smaller ones and get 2 bigger ones that do like...maybe 300? idk, i havent calculated it out yet, but it will be somewhere around 25 times..

Oh, and is this for a reef (or to be reef) or for fish only?

I have a 55gal and I am working towards a reef tank so I guess I need to go ahead and start aiming for around 25 times turnover rate.

So what about getting one 1400 gph pump and splitting it two, or more, ways... that set up versus getting two 700 gph pumps and splitting them both two ways so that I have four effluents entering the tank? I guess that a few of the variables I need to consider would be cost, effeciency, redundency....

Can you think of anything else I need to consider when deciding on the type of powerhead setup I need?
