Just bought this cute wrasse....Have a well established tank but coral for substrade instead of sand.....Books @ the lfs didn't say he needed to sleep in the sand....LFS is closed....Will he be ok tonight??? He just got a full belly of newly hatched brine shrimp....I researched that he could injure his mouth trying to burrow....I have builders sand could I put that in a specimin holder in the corner of the tank??
Thanks for any help!!!!.....Sue

divided wrasse/ vermiculite wrasse
Just bought one of these cute fishes....Owner was not at the LFS when I bought him so I looked him up in one of her reference books....The book did not mention that they sleep in the sand....I have coral substrade & a well established 75 gal tank with 75 lbs of live rock....He ate a belly full of newly hatched brine shrimp & was trying to find a place to burrow in the sand....The LFS is closed....I can get sand tomorrow....Would he adapt to a specimin box full of sand set up in the corner....he just burrowed into the substrade & I'm hoping he comes out tomorrow unhurt....Any suggestions???.....Thanks, Sue

I have a Leopard Wrasse...not that particular kind.....Macropharyngodon meleagris...but their needs are just about the same. I only have an inch or so of sand in the tank and it's been fine for two years or more. That includes a time of about a year when I had a crushed coral substrate of about one-inch. So long as you have a good deal of live rock for it to find an place to seclude itself at night and good water conditions, it will be just fine if you don't have more sand than that.
