Your opinion of acceptable TDS?

I know some are 000ppm crazy and others accept up to 020ppm. Any thoughts?

Obviously 0 is ideal. Personally, my TDS has really never been better than 003ppm and I have hadn't had any problems (knock on wood). I would say <10 is probably acceptable.

Total dissolved solids. I shoot for 0.

Not necessarily.

Use your pressure gauge to assure your prefilters are not clogged, and don’t leave your carbon prefilter in too long relative to its chlorine capacity.

Use your tds meter to monitor the performance of your resin.

Remember that high tds water out of your DI resin isn't necessarily an indication that your prefilters need to be changed. Sediment filters and carbon prefilters don't substantially affect the amount of dissolved solids in the water.

Once it gets over about 3 you begin releasing weakly ionized substances back in to the water stream. These include nitrates, phosphates and silicates so DO NOT let it get over about 2 or 3 or you are asking for trouble. I change my resin when I first start seeing any reading at all just to be safe.
As Russ said rising TDS is not an indication to change prefilters and carbons but it is an indication to check your RO only output if you are not already doing so which you should be. Prefilters and carbons affect suspended solids or partciulates more so than dissolved solids.
