i dont think you're sposed to add them to your tank. I dont know why, but i'm pretty sure the label on the one that i tried one time specifically said not to add it directly to the tank. In any case, i doubt they'd survive.

Yes they most likely will hatch. However the cysts have a shell that will stay and contaminate your tank. You would want to either use decapsulated cysts or decapsulate them yourself.

You let them hatch and the cysts float to the top where they can be removed.

decapsulating involves bleach. Might google it to find the exact procedure.

When I hatch them, I take the brine shrimp eggs and place them in small container of tank water near the sump. About a day later, the eggs hatch. I toss some of the shrimp in each day over the next few days.

I don't do it often. It's either a special treat or something to promote feeding a fish in QT.

Best of luck,

Roy

This is an excellent decapsulating page. I've never done the vinegar stage, I rinse, and then just use dechlorinator.

I have read that the empty eggs can kill some fish, I start mine in a seperate container and just transfer the newly hatched shrimp.

Artemia cysts can harbour harmful bacteria sometimes and I would never put cysts in my tanks. Also, some fish have digestive tracks screwed up after swallowing cysts.
For the most complete information on artemia, see this United Nations site with info from the Artemia Research Centre at the University of Ghent.
