Depends on what your Ca/Alk consumption rate is like and how much daily maintenance you have. If you are running a heavily loaded SPS tank, it's tough to keep up with the demands of the corals. If you have a simple FOWLR setup, the demands are lower and you might get by with 2-Part additives and water changes.
Once setup, Ca Reactors are wonderful at keeping things in balance and adding essential Calcium and Alk supplements. It's really a cost justification and tank loading question. With that said, if you have some basic shop skills and tools, you can build a pretty simple Ca reactor in your garage. We built one and used it for years before purchasing a 2-chamber setup for our latest in-wall system. You don't necessarily need a pH controller if you have a good regulator set and bubble counter. -Doug |

I think they are worth it. I tried the dosing thing and it got old before the end of the week.
I don't use a pH controller with mine and have had quite a boring time not being able to fiddle with it (at least a skimmer cup needs to be emptied once a week!)
