I don't think anyone uses limewater only. It'd be kind of hard to grow anything!

I think Old Salty was joking, and ininuating that if your tank was filled with limewater, nothing would survive. That aside, I thought Randy also used his home made 3 part Ca/Alk/Mg mixture?

I think you need to define your question a little better.

Do you mean limewater as opposed to calcium reactor, or?

I like the corals on the glass trick.

Either someone is very deft with glue or theres like 100 tiny mag floats on the backside lol

Limewater 24/7, with occasional 2/3 part supplementation (Randy's recipe) to handle any drift.

i like the coral frags glued to the back of the tank, but what happens when they grow into each other? There does not seem to be very much space back there for growth, ...

nice tanks, I thought after you get so many coral in your tank limewater would not be able to keep up!

I hear this from a number of reef keepers.. After about a year, when the detritus has built up under the mounds of live rock and sand bed, they blame the SPS for using up the Alk, Mag and Calcium. What I have found is that by removing all my sand and a most of my rock and removing all Detritus, I am able to maintain NSW levels of ALK, Calcium and Mag simply by dripping Kalk and by doing 5 gallon water changes every 2 weeks on my 90. Fellow reefers continue to try and "Sell Me" on the need for a Calcium Reactor but I have no need for it. Guess will see if this changes in a year or so, but I seriuosly doubt it.. My belief is that unkept sand beds are Calcium and ALK sinks, causing the need for Calcium reactors...

Here is an old pic of my 75g, dripped limewater at night. I have since upgraded to a 175g and a calcium reactor but it is strictly for convenience, I got tired of mixing kalk
