Lights off the water.

I'm sure this has been said a thousand times but I never saw it anywhere. I know that most times the recomended height to place Halides off the water is around 8" to keep heat down. My question is this, I have a 55 gallon standard aquarium in which I need to either change my bulb on my power compact florecents or put 2 of the metal halides i have for my 180 reef project on my 55 temp. Since my hailides are 250 watt and I will be running somebulbs that are from 6 months to 8 months old (since it won't be more than a month or 2 untill the new tank is up) how far off the water would I need to place these in order not to harm my shrooms, polyps or xenia? would 8" be to close or would i need to step back to say around 12?

if you plan on hanging both the 250's then i would say at least 12, if you are only going to use 1 of the 250w fixtures, i would say 8 inches should be fine. if you use two of them, keep an eye on your temperature.

yeah planning on useing both to get good coverage. temp should be ok since they won't be in a hook or anything, just something temp untill i can get the stand built for the 180
