Need good canister filter recommendation please.
I have a bad microbubble proble due to using Bio-Wheel filters and I have had it. My tank is 125 gallons with 150 pounds of Live rock.
Was looking at the Magnum 350 Deluxe. No fish yet, want to iron out all problems first. Thinking a 100 gallon filter will be enough with the LR I have and 4 powerheads for 1200 gallons per hour plus filter. Not doing any corals so what does anyone recommend? Glass tank and no room for sump or proper filter. Only options are cannister or hang on. MUST GET RID OF MICROBUBBLES!!!! Thank you |

I would get a good skimmer instead of a canister filter.

No.
OR to amplify: if you are running a tank with mega-predators that load protein into the system, you might need one. If your tank is large enough and your skimmer is good and your live-rock/sand is volume enough, you don't need a filter at all. I run a 52g with tons of corals and 5-7 nano fish with 75lbs live rock and a 4 inch sandbed with a little skimmer [an Urchin, kin to the Remora], and use no mechanical filtration. You can save heat, racket, and another job to do if you keep your fish load well-balanced for your rocks [I way understock because I like a reef proportional to the fish, no whales] and maintain a balanced population of algae eaters and carnivores. What's your stock list, and how much waste? I run my chems [phosban and carbon when needed] in a ladies nylon dropped atop the pump chamber.

Phosban reactor would be great. I use an old sock because I'm maxed out on gadgets in my little bowfront stand.
You can also [I wince at recommending a sponge, because they can be such PITAs for nitrate] put a slitted sponge covering the main return intake, and cut down on bubbles from the skimmer. I've used Magnums, and liked them. I've also heard good things about the Eheims.

just my two cents, XP3 is built strong but I can never get a good seal and if you get sand in the impeller for any reason, it will stop and you will spend a long time trying to get it started again.
Due to above, I bought the Ehiem Pro II, I love it. No issues at all. |

If you are just gping to sue the canister for chemical filtration, get one of the Magnums. You'll save a little $$ and they are dependable. The others mentioned (eheim, filstar) are good canisters also, but intended to also do mechanical and biological filters. Also, they have many more parts, thus much more that can break / malfunction. FWIW, I have been using the same Magnum canister for 13 years with no problems. I only use it occasionally to run carbon, or to run Diatom powder with a micron cartrdige after stirring up my sand bed in one of my FOWLR tanks.
Hope that helps.
