American DJ switch

Whats with a lot of people using a DJ Switch, can someone give me a little insite on why they are used, and how they work? is it like a powerstrip or do you have to hardwire everything. Pics would be helpful.

It's sort of like a power strip...only better! They have individual on/off switches for each plugin allowing you to turn on/off individual pieces of equipment instead of shutting off everything. Some people have hardwired them into some elaborate power panels and they work awesome. I would also highly recommend getting some GFCI outlets or adaptors (I plan on doing this soon myself), one for each piece of equipment that's in your tank if possible (you don't want just one to plug the power panel into because of nuisance trips...one outlet + 1 powerpanel + 1 nuisance trip = EVERYTHING shut off until you reset the GFCI)...got to think SAFETY! Too many people have learned the hard way and had fires breakout because of an overloaded powerstrip.

I work in the DJ lighting business...PLEASE, do not buy the Eliminator product listed above, it is very poorly constructed and in our tests we have seen them overheat and "explode" they are NOT UL approved...

As a disclaimer I work for Chauvet (a competitor to Eliminator and American DJ), and while we make a product like that as well, either ours or the American DJ piece will work much better...I'm experimenting with 4 outlet relay pack that has automatic chases built in to alternate flow for some real randomness...

does anyone know if the outlets on the rear are spaced far enough apart to allow a digital timer to be inserted for light control?

They're too close I believe to get an adaptor of any kind in. The outlets are spaced farther apart then most regular powerpanels but not quite far enough I believe.

Hey saltwaterkid, that link doesn't work.

No. I use these power strip liberators. They are 14" extension cords. http://www.cyberguys.com/templates/s...productID=1757

I can't explain why the link doesn't work, when I try it through IE it works fine but trying to access it through this forum doesn't work. Copy/paste the link to your web browser and it should work for you.

Wow, thanks for all your replies. I think that is definatly worth looking into for my 90 Upgrade, really useful when doing water changes, simply turn off everything in the sump, and the main can stay on.
