cycling questions
I just started up my 45 gallon tank on Sunday. I used a pinch of fish food for the ammonia source. Today I tested for ammonia and got a reading of .50ppm. I'm not sure how high it will get since it's only the fourth day but, how high does it need to get to build up a good bacterial colony? Any idea how long this will take?

Its not how high it goes that counts. What you want to see is it spike and then come back down. You will also need to keep an eye on the nitrites and nitrates.

Sounds like you're well on your way. Now you just need to be patient and wait =)

thanks guys, I'll keep testing ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates everyday to see when it spikes. I can be patient as long as needed.
